BioCytics, Inc. achieves CAP Accreditation

10/26/2011

HUNTERSVILLE, NC—BioCytics, Inc., is pleased to announce it has been awarded accreditation by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) for its Circulating Tumor Cell (CTC) Enumeration assay.  CTCs are cancer cells that travel through the body via the bloodstream.  They are thought have broken free from a solid tumor.  The FDA has approved the use of the CellSearch® CTC test for monitoring to predict overall survival in metastatic breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer patients.

Dr. John Powderly II, BioCytics' President and Laboratory Director, explains that "CTCs are a window to monitor cancer patient's tumor burden and response to therapy.  We are pleased that BioCytics' growth has enabled our clinical molecular diagnostics lab for CTC enumeration to become fully online and operational with CAP accreditation.  We are confident that our lab will aid referring oncologists to better manage their cancer patients.   Cancer patients may also self-refer by obtaining a BioCytics Circulating Tumor Cell Kit to bring to their oncologist to have their own blood drawn and sent to our lab."   BioCytics is experienced in isolating CTCs from patients with a variety of tumor types, including, breast, prostate, colorectal, non-small cell lung, ovarian and pancreatic cancer.

The CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program is recognized by the federal government as being equal to or more stringent than the government's own inspection program.  This stringent inspection program is designed to specifically ensure the highest standard of care for all patients.  BioCytics is one of more than 7,000 CAP-accredited laboratories worldwide.
