John Powderly, MD, CPI
Founder, CEO

Biocytics, Inc. was founded in 2005 by John Powderly, M.D. Dr. Powderly is Triple Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Adult Medical Oncology and the only oncologist Certified Physician Investigator (CPI) in the Charlotte region. Dr. Powderly graduated from Georgetown Medical School as a Lawrence Dean Scholar and performed his Residency in Combined Medicine and Pediatrics Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center. Additionally, Dr. Powderly was an Oncology Fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he held triple faculty staff appointments in the Departments of Medicine, Pediatrics, and Emergency Medicine. While at UNC-Chapel Hill, Dr. Powderly performed cancer research focusing on melanoma and tumor immunology. Moreover, while in medical school, Dr. Powderly performed immunotherapy research under the direction of Dr. Steven Rosenberg at the National Cancer Institute.

Bryan Greene, PhD
Chief Scientific Officer

Dr. Greene has extensive research experience in the areas of apoptosis and cell cycle signaling pathways. In addition, Dr. Greene has over 8 years of experience in cell culture and cryopreservation techniques and applications. Prior to joining Biocytics, Inc., Dr. Greene was a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, where he studied ATM-dependent (protein mutated in ataxia-telangiectasia) cell cycle signaling pathways in human mammary epithelial cells. Dr. Greene received his Ph.D. in Cancer Biology from the Wake Forest University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and a B.S. with Honors in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Currently Dr. Greene is a member of the Association of Clinical Research Professionals, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and is a member of the American Association of Cancer Research.

Jennifer Montague, PhD
Vice President, Business Development

Dr. Montague has over a decade of business and managerial experience with both small start-up companies as well as large pharmaceutical firms. Prior to joining Biocytics, she was an independent consultant for biotech companies, as well as a Co-Founder of the Nevada Biotechnology & Bioscience Consortium. Dr. Montague also served as Senior Scientific Director for an investment bank that specialized in life science companies. Additionally, she was Site Manager for Merck Research Laboratories in La Jolla, CA. Dr. Montague also served as a Manager for a start-up medical health business in Las Vegas, where she was involved in the creation and management of the company’s diagnostics program, including establishing a national and international blood draw program and securing key accounts for the company. She completed her graduate work in apoptosis at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she investigated a potential apoptotic nuclease isolated from T cells in the thymus. Following her time at graduate school, she was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Fellow as a post-doctoral fellow at Duke University.

Jim Powderly, CPA
Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Powderly holds a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license in North Carolina and Florida. Over the past 10 years he has been involved in many start-up businesses in the areas of real estate, finance, accounting, healthcare and biotechnology. He is currently the President of Powderly CPA, PLLC and Arch Lending Group, LLC. Mr. Powderly began his career at PricewaterhouseCoopers as an auditor, working with Fortune 500 companies and mid market clients. Mr. Powderly graduated from Florida State University with a B.S. Accounting and a B.S. in Finance & Applied Economics. Mr. Powderly currently is a member of North Carolina Association of CPAs, Florida Institute of CPAs, and American Institute of CPAs.

Scott Carlberg, MA
Marketing

Mr. Carlberg is founder of Talking Points, LLC, a public affairs management firm. His advisory roles with Biocytics™, Inc. include public affairs, media relations, and business development. Mr. Carlberg focuses “executive positioning” of senior management and drives their corporations’ public affairs activities closer to their objectives. Mr. Carlberg has counseled senior corporate executives, analyzed key stakeholder issues and produced targeted, consistent programming to hit corporate goals and enhance business networks through: Senior Management Development; Corporate Transformation and Project Management; Organization, Communication and Influencing Skills. Mr. Carlberg holds an M.A. degree in Human Relations from The University of Oklahoma and a M.A. degree in Broadcast Communications from Western Illinois University.

 

Greg Carlin, JD
Legal

Mr. Carlin provides legal advice in the areas of patent and intellectual property (IP) law. Mr. Carlin has extensive experience in preparing and prosecuting dozens of patent applications for software and mechanical technologies with a primary focus on medical devices. He worked as an intellectual property attorney for Alston & Bird, LLP for 6 years. He currently works for Edwards Lifesciences, LLC as a patent counsel. Mr. Carlin earned his J.D. degree from The George Washington University School of Law and he also holds a M.S. degree in Bioengineering from the University of Pittsburgh.

 

Scott R. Burger, MD
Business

Dr. Burger is the principal of Advanced Cell & Gene Therapy, a consulting firm specializing in cell, gene, and tissue-based therapies. Dr. Burger works with clients in industry and academic centers worldwide, providing assistance in process development and validation, GMP/GTP manufacturing, GMP facility design and operation, regulatory affairs, technology evaluation, and strategic analysis. He received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and completed postgraduate training in Laboratory Medicine, as well as a clinical fellowship in Transfusion Medicine and a postdoctoral research fellowship, at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Burger served as medical director of the Cell Therapy Clinical Laboratory and Molecular and Cellular Therapeutics Facility at University of Minnesota, where he was responsible for process development, validation, and GMP production of a broad range of novel cell and gene therapies, in support of over 75 clinical trials. Dr. Burger also was Vice-President for Research and Development at Merix Bioscience, a biotechnology company focused on dendritic cell immunotherapy. He serves on the USP Cell, Gene and Tissue Therapies Expert Committee, the advisory boards of several cell therapy biotechnology companies, and has served as editor of the International Society for Cellular Therapy Telegraft, and on the ISCT Executive Committee. A frequently invited speaker at industry and academic conferences, he is the author of over 100 scientific publications and presentations, and recipient of numerous honors and awards.

 

Drew Meunier, JD
Legal

Mr. Meunier is a Principal in the Atlanta, Georgia office of Fish & Richardson. He specializes in preparing and prosecuting domestic and international patent applications and preparing non-infringement and invalidity opinions in the chemical, pharmaceutical and medical device areas. Before coming to Fish & Richardson, Mr. Meunier was head of the Chemical and Pharmaceutical Patents practice group at Alston & Bird.
